First Installment- Istanbul

So I am now nearing the end of my Turkey trip and since I set up the blog late I figure it is about time to update you all. Here is the basic breakdown:

Day 1 - Time with family, Buyuk Camlica

Day 2 – Istanbul tourist spots: Sultan Ahmed Masjid (Blue Mosque/Sulaymania), Turkish and Islamic Art Museum, Hagia Sofia, Yerebatan Cistern

Day 3 - Trip to Hazrat Yusa tomb, Beykoz

Day 4 - Trip to Sile (Black Sea town)

Day 5 - Istanbul tourist spots: Dolmebahce Palace, Taxim Square

Day 6 - Istanbul tourist spots: Topkapi Palace, Kapalicarsi (Grand Underground Bazaar)

Day 7 - Shopping at Kapalicarsi

As many of you may know I am travelling the first leg of my journey with my Khala (Aunt on my mother’s side). My khala married a Turk and his family live in Istanbul in the winter months though they are originally from the Black sea near Trabzon, a place called Cayeli where- yes you’ve guessed it- they grow Chai (tea). They are all tea farmers by trade and spend the rest of the year in the village to oversee the management of the crops. They are also all some of the nicest people you will ever meet.

My Uncle’s cousin, Murat, decided that he would be our Chauffeur throughout our trip and so from our first day onwards we have been in his company. The whole family are truly lovely.

We were picked up at the airport by my Uncle’s elder brother, Luqman, who also happens to be a taxi driver- very convenient! Unfortunately our flight had been delayed, originally by 10 minutes but we had ended up circling Istanbul for about half an hour so in the end were quite late on arrival so we ended up taking a mad ride back to the house which is on the Kadikoy side of the Bosphorus (Asian) in a district called Acibadem. By mad I mean that Luqman uncle was a taxi driver through and through! J We were between lanes for much of the journey, on the phone, weaving- all those things you are warned about when it comes to drivers in other countries!

Anyway, we made it home safely and that is what counts. We spent the first night at Luqman uncle’s house but moved the next day into Vezirle apartments, where my uncle’s cousins mainly reside. Here we are staying with his other brother, Cengis’s, family. Cengis, Raheeme (his wife), 6 year old Zeynep and 7 month old Cihan. The kids are so adorable I cannot explain! Bless them. They have been so good to us.

In the same apartments reside Raheeme’s mother and brothers, Murat and his brothers’ families, mother and father and sisters. They are the friendliest people, very welcoming, so hospitable and always have smiles on their faces- I have never felt awkward in their presence even with the language barrier. We are always being fed and watered- in fact I don’t think I have ever eaten so much sweet stuff in my life! Syrup chestnuts, Baklava, Turkish delight, halwa, sakar paras- Oh my LORD!! I think I am all sugared out! Good thing we walk around so much every day otherwise I might have out on a stone already. Not so good of the upcoming wedding pictures in Pakistan.....

Did I mention they have the most beautiful view form their roof terrace? I'll attach a picture.

Anyway, it is late and i am shattered. I will fill you in on my exploits later. I think this is enough as an intro, right??

Starting on the right foot

I recently wrote an article for MIE (muslimsinengland.com, title "Israel 2010") that has made me think of my upcoming trip and take pause. As you all know, I am taking 5 months out to travel the world a little. My itinerary will include Turkey, Qatar, Pakistan, the Philippines, Japan, New Zealand, Australia and the USA.

I always planned to volunteer in the Philippines and will be out there for almost 2 months working with local people on the island of Mindanao on interfaith and peace building projects insha'Allah. I was also hoping to do a little voluntary work in Pakistan but have yet to form any solid links. For the rest of my trip I just planned to have fun and explore.

However, thinking of it as just a holiday has made me feel slightly hypocritical so I have made a few crucial decisions and I would like you and everyone I know to hold me to them and help me achieve them.

Although the Israel and Palestine situation (in the MIE article) is probably a slightly more extreme example than anywhere I will be going, I feel like we often holiday in many locations where there are still deep rooted problems to do with poverty, inequality and development and yet ignore them and refuse to address them or think about them whilst there. Now, I am not saying we are not entitled to some off time, and I intend to have that too, but I feel I must practise what I preach so here is my plan:

In every country I visit I plan to try and seek out something- a project, an NGO, media, a person- that is development related and learn something, and share something. So, if you have any links, whether they be charity related, political, personal etc. In any or all of the countries above, please share them with me. I want to make as much use of this trip as I can and you can help me do it.

Let me know your thoughts on this. The more ideas the better!

The Plan

So, a little while ago I was working for Platform2- a wonderful job and a brilliant project if there ever was one- and I was offered the opportunity to visit the Philippines by a colleague of mine. If you know me, you know that I could not miss an opportunity such as this. Plus my contract was coming to an end in January, I had taken no annual leave and thought- why not just leave a month or two early, right? Right!
Having researched a little into a visit to the Philippines, I realised that I would be embarking on quite a costly venture so.... why not just up the adventure a little more? Looking into a round the world trip- which I have always wanted to do- I found that it would probably make more economical sense to take the journey of a lifetime so now here I am and here is my itinerary:

Turkey- 10 days
Qatar- 5 days
Pakistan- just under 1 month
Philipppines- just under 2 months
Japan- 1 week
New Zealand- just under 3 weeks
Australia (Sydney area)- 1 week
Dallas, USA- 1 week

And then back to the UK for a good friend of mine's wedding! A whirlwind trip if ever there was one. I'd love to go for longer but.... maybe I can go again. ;o)

Insha'Allah (God willing) I will be spending tme volunteering in both Pakistan and the Philippines but everywhere else my plans are very flaky.
I wil try and update my blog along the way- hopefully, better than I did with my Ghana trip!

So, here goes.....
